- How I feel about this character:
- I really like Mayu. I feel like she got a bit of scorn from the fandom for leaving Yato, but she knew it wasn’t a good fit and did what she thought was best. I like that she’s a woman who knows her mind–she doesn’t let other people’s opinions of her actions sway her choices, and when it comes down to the wire, she is there with her chin held high, ready to do what’s right. I also appreciate that she’s well-developed for a side character–we actually know quite a bit of her back story and know some of her faults and concerns, such as her habit of not being able to settle down with one god for very long. Mayu’s cool.
- All the people I ship romantically with this character:
- Nobody really? She’s a strong independent woman and she don’t need no man!
- My non-romantic OTP for this character:
- I really like her as one of Tenjin’s shinki. I hope she does decide to stick with him for quite some time, just so that we don’t lose her presence in the background of the story. 🙂 I also think her admiration of Tsuyu is nice and I wish more girl friendships got screen time in manga D;
- My unpopular opinion about this character:
- Umm, dunno if this qualifies as unpopular, but I think she was totally within her rights to quit as Yato’s shinki? If you compare her life as Yato’s shinki to the lives of many other shinki out there, who are pampered, glorified, and treated like treasures, living as Yato’s shinki really is tough!! I definitely don’t think she was ungrateful or unfair when she decided to leave him, and I think her returning to help him with the purification really shows how much of a good person she is.
- One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
- I think it would be funny to see her becoming famous in the world of shinki for something other than battle prowess–like giving interviews for the shinki magazine, being the spokesperson for a shinki-based television show… I’d like, in general, to know more about what the lives of shinki are like when they aren’t weapons of war, when they’re just mirrors and pot lids and pipes and other mundane items. How do the shinki of non-combat gods live their lives? 😀
- my OTP:
- None.
- my cross over ship:
- Is Lawrence from Spice and Wolf a weird one to say? I think they’d be a funny business partner pair, at least.
- a headcanon fact:
- Mayu has been a shinki to more gods that most nora have, but she has never, had more than one name at a time. Her secret fear is having an overwhelming urge to leave and then her god or goddess saying no, and refusing to release her. Feeling caged into a commitment like that would be her absolute nightmare–and that’s why she has a tendency to pick gods who have a reputation for a relatively high turnover rate for shinki, like Yato and Tenjin.
