You’re making me regret declining an opportunity to do a tribute piece for the Voltron premiere in L.A. And of course now I’ve been seeing it everywhere

GIRLLLLL IT’S FABULOUS. It’s very much a remake in the spirit of the original, and therefore very much a sentai/Power Rangers-esque fight-the-giant-monsters-with-our-transforming-robot show. BUT it’s also made by a lot of the team that did The Last Airbender, so every one of the characters is fantastic–they are witty, funny, touching, genuine sweethearts and everything about them is just great, and the plot is a lot more than just “good guys punching bad guys in a giant robot”–it deals pretty seriously with stuff like PTSD, genocide, grief, slavery, personal identity,
non-toxic

masculinity, and even, if you’re paying attention, social anxiety, and it manages to somehow do all that in a way that’s kid friendly??? I’m still kind of amazed.

Plus, I am really loving the representation on the show; if you haven’t seen all the character designs, it’s super worth looking into them for just how diverse they’ve made the cast. Also A+++ on their treatment of female characters.

It’s also a very short show. I think the episodes are like 25 minutes on Netflix with the exception of the one hour starter episode, and there are only 11 episodes in the first season, so you can blow through it really fast if you decide to watch it. Please watch it.

Season 2 is coming out later this year and I literally can’t even take the wait.
