Honestly, I had no expectations and still I somehow manage to feel disappointed.
And no, it’s not because there was a lack of “character development” (which seems to be this fandom’s alternate name for interiority). We all know by now that Keith is ~special~ and expecting even shreds of new content in random promotional materials is hoping for too much.
And no, it’s not about ships, because honestly I think Allurance is pretty cute. I’d be okay with Allurance being the show’s endgame even, despite the fact that it’s not something I’m actively a big fan of.
It’s just the goddamn “one-note wonder” feel to the jokes. It’s the same one or two elements of each character being endlessly repeated in all the materials, show or outside the show–I mean, someone probably ought to tell the content producers that the more times you tell a joke, the less entertaining it gets? We’ve seen flirty, gushing Lance so many times now that it’s painfully predictable and actively boring.
I’m guessing the Hunk blog is going to be about food too, because Hunk hasn’t had a joke that wasn’t food or another fat-related topic since season two.
“B-BUT! Lance like girls and Hunk likes food! Those are their passions!”
I KNOW. We all know. We can write these jokes for them at this point because the producers have beat these dead horses so many times.
Do you think Voltron’s staff knows that they already have other built in elements of these characters that are also (often more) entertaining?
They could have made jokes about Lance and Kaltenecker. They could have made jokes about Lance’s facial care routine. They could have made jokes about Lance always being the one who ends up on cleaning duty with Coran. They could have even done the flirting thing and still had it feel fresh if they used it as part of a bigger: “Hey, of all the characters, Lance actually seems to be making the most alien friends?” and just recapped all his random, cute interactions with aliens.
They could have done literally anything but the exact same one-note joke they keep doing over and over.
But they didn’t.
And actually, I’m not sure why I ever even thought they might.
