I tagged it that way specifically to piss you off.Or, you know, because I spent multiple paragraphs noting that, as the emotional heart of the story, Keith has an important impact on Shiro’s character and that his strongest tensions include links to Shiro, before I transitioned into the statement that applying the premise of my …

Why Do Certain Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) – Part 1
(Damn, look who’s showing up ten years late to this discussion with Starbucks…)Hey guys, just want to start with a preface here: I’ve recently been in several separate conversations about why certain ships become so popular, what leads people (and woman in particular) to ship so much, why certain fandoms become over-zealous in their shipping, …
Why Do Certain Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) – Part 2
<- Start back at part 1 or you’re going to be very confused! This time my victim of choice example is Klance (and Allurance and Lotura too).In a previous post, I established the premise that shippers focus their efforts and attention on ships between characters who exhibit the most compelling dynamism, the greatest amount of …
Why Do Certain Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) – Part 3
<- Start at Part 1 for best understanding<- And here’s Part 2 if you need it!I’m going to end this discussion with a case-in-point comparing the mega-popularity of non-canon ships against semi-canon ships, and then discuss what this all means for writers, and how examining the popularity of ships in media can actually improve the …
Okay, but where is…
echodrops: echodrops: echodrops: That one Hot Wings fic where Dabi is Touya and isn’t even actually a villain, he’s just so pissed about growing up his whole life being told he’s a weak failure who could never become a pro hero that he decides to give Endeavor the biggest middle finger ever by infiltrating the …
Will you be talking about Kiribaku too?
Isn’t that just canon??? I’m kidding. Kiribaku will be mentioned, but it’s kind of in a unique position because at least some of the production team–maybe not Horikoshi himself but definitely the movie staff lol–are definitely deliberately baiting with Kiribaku, so it’s in a bit of a “privileged” position as far as fan pairings go, …
Maybe you won’t read this before you post on ships, but for instance, I don’t think there really are shipping wars in bnha, right? I have my fav ships too, but whenever I see fanart of any studentxstudent ship, I think, ‚oh, that‘s cute.‘, and that can be applied to all the ships! I think it’s because all the characters are so likable and have distinct personalities and most get along well. You don’t get metas on toxic tropes or messages etc, the characters all have good, interesting Dynamics!
Hi, no worries–the post isn’t about ship wars but about what makes “non-canon” ships mega-popular even though they have no chance of becoming canon. Some ship wars are mentioned but the focus of the post is on why so many (female) fans prefer non-canon ships to the ships that actually have more basis in canon, …
Oh lord I started a post about shipping and it got out of control… This is going to be a three-part essay. Someone save me, why did I start this???Edit: Whoo, I finished part 2… It’s so long guys… So long…
I’m the Another Anon. Thanks for your answer. I thought I wasnt trying to perpetuate the ideas of purity culture (bc I hate it too) so your answer opened my eyes. The reason I brought up the shipping with the dark skinned boy around the same age thing was bc I saw it as a reason ppl were ok with the ship (as ive seen ships that have characters tht r 17 & 19 seen as pedo so them not having 1 made it look acceptable in their eyes) & the skin color came from the Latin Lover trope I see used a lot.
Hey, thanks for coming back to talk to me more about this! Sorry if I came across as aggressive by the way; usually when someone starts to bring up stuff like this it is because they’re really into the purity culture or have some other chip on their shoulder, so I usually respond like that. But …
Maybe you don’t want to answer this, but do you think Voltron falls under the bury your gays, word of gay and/or queerbaiting tropes?
Ah, at the risk of my follow count which dips whenever I’m anything less than glowing about Voltron, lol…1) The Voltron writers knew about the “bury your gays” trope and killed their gay characters anyway, so yeah, that’s pretty blatantly bury your gays, no way around that. Maybe if it had been one of the …
