(Damn, look who’s showing up ten years late to this discussion with Starbucks…)Hey guys, just want to start with a preface here: I’ve recently been in several separate conversations about why certain ships become so popular, what leads people (and woman in particular) to ship so much, why certain fandoms become over-zealous in their shipping, …

Why Do Certain Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) – Part 2
<- Start back at part 1 or you’re going to be very confused! This time my victim of choice example is Klance (and Allurance and Lotura too).In a previous post, I established the premise that shippers focus their efforts and attention on ships between characters who exhibit the most compelling dynamism, the greatest amount of …
Why Do Certain Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) – Part 3
<- Start at Part 1 for best understanding<- And here’s Part 2 if you need it!I’m going to end this discussion with a case-in-point comparing the mega-popularity of non-canon ships against semi-canon ships, and then discuss what this all means for writers, and how examining the popularity of ships in media can actually improve the …
I’m the Another Anon. Thanks for your answer. I thought I wasnt trying to perpetuate the ideas of purity culture (bc I hate it too) so your answer opened my eyes. The reason I brought up the shipping with the dark skinned boy around the same age thing was bc I saw it as a reason ppl were ok with the ship (as ive seen ships that have characters tht r 17 & 19 seen as pedo so them not having 1 made it look acceptable in their eyes) & the skin color came from the Latin Lover trope I see used a lot.
Hey, thanks for coming back to talk to me more about this! Sorry if I came across as aggressive by the way; usually when someone starts to bring up stuff like this it is because they’re really into the purity culture or have some other chip on their shoulder, so I usually respond like that. But …
Another anon. Regarding the ship ask I think it should be acknowledged that skin color and sex is also a reason as to why the ships are popular. 2 light skinned guys among a cast of darker skinned characters? 1 of them being canonically Japanese? And the other ship with a light dark skinned boy around the same age. All being male. Oh yeah ppl are fetishizing the hell out of the characters. A (This is in no way meant to be rude to you, just pointing it out)
I mean… “Cast of darker skinned characters” isn’t really accurate unless you’re including the alien characters like the Galra. Until Season 7, there were only two major characters darker than Lance, Hunk and Allura, both of whom are shipped as well, although I agree that Hunk is under-appreciated (but again, that’s in part because the …
Can you explain what you mean when something is too good which can minimize the fandom. Thats an interesting phenomenon im not too familiar with. It sounds so weird too, something is so good it doesnt get mega popular
This post summarizes the effect in more detail than I have time to right now, so I’d check this one out: http://irrevocably-voltron.tumblr.com/post/171919729853/a-thought-on-why-average-to-just-above-averageThe basic premise is that fandoms are more productive when the product is mediocre because mediocre narratives are hotbeds of untapped potential. These types of stories present characters, plots, worlds, and ideas that never …
I’m just a random anon, but I don’t think it’s wrong to watch shows for exclusively ships- It’s just that if you do, you have to be prepared for the fact it might never become canon. Some people get super over-invested (carried away?) with how much they let it affect their own life and now a lot of the fandom’s in meltdown because of it which is horrible…
ashacrone:echodrops: It’s my solemn belief that in well-written and well-managed media this kind of thing does not happen. Ships, ship wars, and fans themselves get out of control because of poorly written canonical character interactions and poorly managed expectations on the part of producers. Although there are certainly extremists of questionable mental health levels who …
